Carnation Pink

posted Saturday, 11 April 2009

carnation pinkCarnation Pink has been around almost as long as I have.  It was introduced in 1949 and is in the red hue family.  I just realized that there is no pink crayon!  There is carnation pink, piggy pink, pink flamingo, pink sherbet, and tickle me pink...but no plain ole pink.  That leads me to wonder why pink isn't called light red.  I couldn't find very much when I seached the Internet.  There are several websites about Pink Floyd and how pink is thought to be a feminine color, but not much on why pink is pink.  I did find this:  Pink is a pale red color.  The use of the word for the color was first recorded in the lated 17th century when describing the flowers of pink, flowering plants in the genus Dianthus.

Growing up, my parents liked to listen to Marty Robbins.  One of his songs was called "A White Sports Coat and A Pink Carnation"---A white sports coat and a pink carnation.  I'm all dressed up for the dance.  A white sports coat and a pink carnation.  I'm all alone in romance.  Boy, does that bring back memories.

Of course, pink used to be my older granddaughter's favorite color.  Recently she said that it wasn't anymore.  I can't remember what her favorite color is now.

I'm sure that many women like pink carnations, but I prefer red roses.  Well, I guess I have to admit that I probably like just around any kind of flower, even wild ones.

I like the carnations where the tips of the flower are a different color..... so dainty and pretty.

Gabby is learning her colors and the first color she learned to recognize was pink. Whe she sees something pink, she always tells us...pink.
