My Great Grandmother

posted Monday, 30 May 2005
When my younger sister C was born in 1952, my father’s mother and grandmother (Grandmother D) came to stay with us in New Mexico.  It was the first time that Grandmother D had been out of the state of Texas.  She was 82 years old.  I don’t know if she ever left Texas again.  She died in 1966 at the age of 96.  I was in college the last time that I saw her.  She was bedridden in a nursing home, but her mind was sharp.  When I was younger, she lived in a little house in town—two bedrooms, a bath, living room, and kitchen with a table.  I still have a seashell that she gave to me.  I can hear the ocean in it.  (I hope one day to give it to one of my own granddaughters and tell her that it belonged to her great, great, great grandmother!)  Grandmother D had fig trees in her yard with the most delicious figs that I have ever eaten.  They were great fresh or made into preserves.  I can still taste them!  Yum, yum.
