When we were in grade school, our parents gave D and me cod liver oil pills every day. They were tiny, dark red, round pills about the size of a beebee. It was good that our parents cared about our health. The only trouble was I had a hard time swallowing them. So I had to open my mouth wide and my mom or dad would toss the pill into the back of my throat. Yuck! Ugh! Even today I can’t swallow more than one pill at a time, and I need LOTS of water.
Update: I went on the Internet to find out about cod liver oil and cod liver oil pills. Here is what one site had: Prior to the national passion for fortified foods, cod liver ol gained favor and reputation among the medical community for its high concentrations of vitamins A and D. Pediatricians recommended its use to mothers as a prevention for rickets, caused by calcium and vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin A deficiency is know to cause immune deficiencies, increased respiratory infections, and blindness. Cod liver oil, a rich source of both of these vitamins, seemed "good for whatever ailed you."
How is cod liver oil good for you?
I was going to ask the same thing Amy. :-)
:) my mom made us take a healthy spoonful of cod liver oil ( Scott's
Emulsion ) after dinner every night. This sounds weird, but i actually
liked the taste!
