In my diary, I made this list of events.  I've provided links for some items in case you want to know more.

January 12, 1970 - Biafra surrendered.

January 14 - Birth control pill hearing.  May cause cancer.  [It seems that birth control pills have always been controversial.]

February - Pollution and population a big issue and lots of headlines.

March - U.S. secret war in Laos and Post Office strikes around the country - 210,000 out of 750,000 US postal employees walk out.  President Nixon assigns military units to New York City post offices.  Strike lasts two weeks.

April 11 - Apollo 13 started for the moon.

April 13 - Trouble on Apollo 13.  Oxygen tanks exploded.  Only one left.  Heading for earth without landing on moon.

April 13 - L.A. teachers went on strike for pay raise and smaller classrooms.

April 18 - Astronauts got home safely.

April 22 - Earth Day.

April 30 - U.S. troops went into Cambodia.

May 4 - Four Kent State students killed by National Guard during riot.

Note:  My last entry was May 4, which was only three days before I met my husband.  I guess I must have been distracted!

I live about 7 miles from the Yablonski house. I remember that well. I lived in Cleveland, Ohio when the Kent State stuff was happening. I remember US troops going into Cambodia. Looking back, it seems things did not change much.
