Here are some things my dad said when we were growing up. He was pretty crazy sometimes!
“I don’t like fried chicken. I eat it to get rid of it.”
“The unusual is more usual than the usual.”
“I’m too broke to pay attention.”
"Tired of standing? Sit on your fist and rare (or rear?] back on your thumb?"
“I’m so hungry that my stomach thinks my throat is cut.”
"If you had some bacon, we could have bacon and eggs, if I had some eggs."
At the dinner table: We'd ask, “May I have a roll?” My dad would say, “Yes, get on the floor and roll.”
At dessert time: “May I have a piece of that?” “No, your mom made it just to look at.”
“I taught you everything I know, and you still don’t know anything.” (For years we thought he meant that we weren’t smart. When we were grown, we finally realized that he was really saying that he didn’t know very much.)
Here is a photo of my dad taken sometime during the 1940s. Can you tell he is from Texas?! (Click on his photo to see him better.)
Here is a photo of my dad with my daughter the day she was married (1994). He was 76. (Click on their photo to see them better.)
Great idea! I love the sayings. I'll have to get mom to write down the
ones she and dad use to use all the time.
