Throw Away Those Diapers, Please!

posted Friday, 4 April 2008

It was easy to potty train both of our children.  At least, that's the way that I remember it.  I was really glad when I didn’t have to change diapers anymore.  There is only one time that I did things wrong according to the popular child-rearing books of the day.  I think Amy may have had a bit of a hard time with a new baby in the house.  Anyway, Amy was wearing training pants when Lee was born, but one day she stood there in the middle of the hallway looking at me and wet her pants.  I jumped up, swatted her on the bottom, took her to the bathroom, and told her not to ever do that again.  And she didn’t.

But a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.

Well, what about 2nd grade when the teacher would not let me go to the bathroom?

That doesn't count because you wouldn't have done it if that teacher would have let you go to the girls' room. Shame on her.

We are trying to potty train Gabby right now. She went on the potty for number 2 last week really easily. We clapped and cheered. This week when you see her with the grunting face, and then when you tell her let's go potty, she shakes her head no. I don't know what we did wrong? I guess we will keep on trying.

James and Ben, our two youngest, are just under 14 months apart. For what must have seemed like forever, poor Joyce spent her entire day changing diapers. And our oldest (Andy, who was six when the youngest was born) spent all his time fetching diapers for Mom. (Just so I don't sound like a complete chauvinist, I've changed a diaper or two in my day.)

By the way, thanks for your service. I do believe military service is tougher on the wives than the men.
